Integrating Modern Living in Groningen's Historic Center
Located in Groningen’s vibrant historic city center, Herestraat 42 exemplifies the unique challenges and opportunities of urban development in a densely populated and historically rich environment. This project seamlessly combines retail and residential spaces in a context where new construction meets heritage.
Project Overview
This ambitious project spans three lots and includes a large retail space, complete with a basement, adjacent to a national monument. Due to the constraints of the site, theelevator shaft also serves as the location for the tower crane, leading to aninnovative construction approach from the inside out.
The retail space is now fully operational, offering a dynamic shopping experience. Above this bustling commercial area, work is ongoing to complete the rooftop residential units. These ten new apartments provide a tranquil retreat from the busy street below, boasting features that enhance comfort and livability: abundant natural light, open air, expansive urban views, and serenity.
Designand Architecture
The facade of Herestraat42 draws inspiration from classical architectural compositions, featuring abase, a body, and a crown-like head. This design not only respects the historical context but also creates a visual link between the old and new structures along the street. The building stands as a bridge between the pastand present, harmonizing with the historic surroundings while introducing modern amenities.
