Two Faced: Two-Sided Transformation on the Zuiderdiep in Groningen
A unique architectural transformation was realized on the Zuiderdiep in Groningen. The project, called Two Faced, combines the preservation of historic elements with modern architecture. As architects, we had the opportunity to design a new street that connects both the old and the new city in a surprising way.
Topping and Restoration: History and Innovation Hand in Hand
At the front of the project, the focus was on toppings, renovation and restoration of the existing buildings. This carefully took into account the historical value of the street, subtly enhancing the architecture without detracting from the history of the Zuiderdiep.
Urban Densification and Sustainable Transformation
At the back, we were given the freedom to innovate. Here, the boundaries between old and new were blurred by urban densification and adding modern forms of living, such as apartments and student housing.
Architecture that Connects Past and Future
what Two Faced what makes it so special is the way in which the transformation of the area fits within the urban structure of Groningen. By opting for sustainable construction techniques and the reuse of existing materials, the project contributes to the city's ecological future. The integration of different architectural styles creates a dynamic whole that both respects the past and looks ahead to the future.
Sustainable Urban Renewal
This project is a great example of how architecture can contribute to urban renewal and sustainability. It shows how toppings and transformation be able to go hand in hand without losing sight of the city's identity.
