Modern Living and Shopping in the Historic Heart of Groningen
Right in the bustling center of Groningen is Herestraat 42: a project that cleverly combines modern urban planning and historic architecture. Designed by Urban Climate Architects, this building brings old and new together in a natural way, with a mix of retail space and homes.
A Smart City Project
Herestraat 42 covers three lots and borders a national monument. The ground floor retail space, with a basement, is already in full use and contributes to the city's vibrant atmosphere. Due to the tight location, an innovative construction method was used: the elevator shaft temporarily served as a tower crane. Ten new apartments are being built above the shops — quiet, bright living areas with stunning views of the city.
Timeless Design
The facade of Herestraat 42 has a classic structure with a solid base, a strong middle section and an elegant corner. This ensures that the building fits perfectly with the historic environment, while offering contemporary amenities. The design by Urban Climate Architects creates a natural connection between heritage and modern comfort.
Topping up: Efficient Urban Expansion
In a busy city like Groningen, space is scarce. That's why topping up — adding extra floors to existing buildings — is a smart way to make the city grow. At Herestraat 42, this technique is being used to build ten new apartments without additional land use. By using light and sustainable materials, the impact on the existing building remains minimal. This project shows how topping up contributes to a sustainable and future-proof city.
Herestraat 42 is an inspiring example of how history and modern architecture come together in a vibrant and sustainable cityscape.
