Summit and Transformation: Apartments Herestraat 91, 93 — “Het Raam”
At Herestraat 91 and 93 in Groningen, UC Architects has created an inspiring example of redevelopment: Het Raam. This innovative residential project shows how summits and transformation can contribute to sustainable urban renewal, without sacrificing the historic city center.
Architecture as a catalyst for innovation
Instead of demolishing, UC Architects opted for a smart transformation of the existing roof landscape. With an addition of two buildings, 500 m² of new living space has been added. The design is inspired by an enlarged 19th-century window — a powerful architectural statement that reinforces the relationship between inside and outside.
Renovation with respect for context
This redevelopment combines subtle urban integration with innovative living quality. The “rooms in the window” offer residents a unique view of Groningen, while the design respects and enriches the existing structure. The project shows how housing transformation can contribute to densifying the city center in a sustainable way.
