Topping & Transformation by UC Architects: Five Extra Housing Units in Groningen
In the heart of Groningen, on the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, realized UC Architects an innovative transformation and renovation of a historic building from 1915. By means of topping — adding new floors on top of the existing structure — five additional residential units were created. This smart densification maintains the character of the original building while adding modern qualities.
Topping as a sustainable compaction strategy
The vertical extension is a powerful example of how urban growth can be achieved within the existing building stock. Through toppings this project not only increases the number of homes in the city center, but is done with respect for the existing architecture. The slanted property boundaries were used to design a dynamic and well-integrated roof structure.
Renovation and contrast in harmony
The renovation of the original building went hand in hand with the addition of the upper floors. Despite the difference in the zeitgeist between the old and new buildings, visual harmony is created. The extension provides a stylish contrast that does not overshadow the historic façade, but rather enhances it. This balance between old and new is characteristic of the way in which UC Architects.
Architecture that connects past and future
This transformation by UC Architects shows how innovative architecture can contribute to the future of urban areas, without losing sight of heritage. By means of topping new living space is being created in the city center, while the building retains its historic identity.
