Summit & Transformation in Groningen: Herestraat 5 by UC Architects
Right in the center of Groningen is located Herestraat 5, better known as The Ladies of Groningen — a striking example of how transformation, renovation and toppings come together in one architectural project. Commissioned by a group of women living together, designed UC Architects an innovative roof structure on top of a historic building from the 19th century.
Architecture and housing transformation through topping
The existing structure, characterized by its narrow and high proportions, served as inspiration for this housing transformation. The former roof surface has been reused as a foundation for a new floor — a textbook example of toppings within a historical context. The roof structure was given an archetypal shape with a contemporary look. Horizontal wooden façade bands reinforce the layering of the design and provide an airy visual connection with the city.
Sustainable uptake as a renovation strategy
Thanks topping extra living space was added without the need for new land — entirely in line with sustainable renovation and urban densification. Details like the wrought-iron railings with feminine motifs give the building character, while a work of art with seven women adorns the shared living room — an ode to the residents and their connection to the place.
A new layer in the city
This project illustrates how innovative architecture, sustainable topping, and respectful renovation be able to provide a powerful answer to urban housing challenges together. Herestraat 5 shows how innovative designs can enhance historic buildings without losing their identity.
