Groundbreaking CLT project by Urban Climate Architectsaan de Molslaan: Sustainable and Low-Carbon Timber Construction in Delft (NL)
Urban Climate Architects creates innovative and sustainable architecture with a focus on biobased construction and nature-inclusive design. A leading example of this is our circular apartment complex on the Molslaan in Delft, completed in May 2021. This project shows how timber construction, specifically with CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), can contribute to low-carbon and paris proof designs.
Innovative Timber Construction with CLT
The transformation of an existing school building resulted in a three-storey city block with 12 apartments. The complete construction consists of CLT walls and floors, while the natural wood structure remains visible in ceilings and walls. CLT offers significant advantages over concrete, including an 80% weight reduction, which meant that no additional foundation was required. This makes CLT an ideal solution for sustainable urban densification and circular architecture.
Optimized Biobased Construction Technology
An important focus was on optimizing the construction system within the set fire and noise standards. Together with JM Concepts, a specialized CLT builder, and their wood advisor, we developed an innovative acoustic front wall solution. This preserves the wood finish in three walls and ceiling, providing a warm, natural look and a healthier indoor climate.
Sustainable and Paris Proof Developments
With our expertise in nature-inclusive and biobased construction, we create environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing living environments. This project contributes to a circular future and proves that architecture and sustainability can go hand in hand.
