Summit & Transformation: Herestraat 5, Groningen
Right in the city center of Groningen is De Dames van Groningen, a project in which architecture, summits and renovation come together. This historic building has been expanded with an innovative volume designed specifically for a group of women living together.
Architecture and home transformation
This transformation was inspired by the narrow and high proportions of the original building. The former roof was reused as a new floor, in line with the historical context. The topping was given an archetypal shape with a modern look. Horizontal wooden bands reinforce the layering of the façade and make the building visually blend into the air.
Sustainable sustainability as a future-proof renovation
By opting for tops, extra living space was created without additional land. This is in line with the vision of sustainable renovation and urban densification. Traditional details, such as the wrought iron railings with feminine motifs, give character to the façade. A work of art with seven women adorns the shared living room, symbolizing the residents.
A new layer in the city
This project shows how architecture, renovation and transformation contribute to a sustainable city. Herestraat 5 proves that innovative designs can enhance historic buildings without losing their identity.
