Housing is becoming a scarce commodity in the Dutch urban landscape. One of the biggest challenges for the current architectural generation is to add qualitative housing to cities without expanding into the even scarcer green zones, aligning with the sustainability ambitions of modern society. This requires a creative approach.
Creating Quality Through Densification
De Stede is a shopping mall in The Hague where a master plan was created to enhance its quality. By transforming the unattractive backside, previously used for logistics, into a vibrant front side with housing, we added 90 social housing apartments. This project also enhances urban living and safety by increasing public space. The design includes a carpark on the ground level with apartments built on top.
The goal of this project is to integrate new building blocks seamlessly with existing structures, creating a cohesive urban environment. The use of similar building language and architectural elements ensures this integration.
