In The Hague, a new layer of modern apartments is being added a top an existing gallery flat originally designed by Piet Zanstra.This iconic building, characterized by its “floating” horizontals and regular rhythm, sits a top a shopping center near the coast.
Expanding with elegance
The project involves adding 14 new apartments to the existing structure, which has 10 apartments per floor. This vertical expansion enhances the building's density while creating a contemporary ‘crown’ that capsthe structure. The new layer features a horizontally oriented design that is visually distinct from the underlying volume, supported by a robust roof construction that accentuates this new architectural pinnacle.
Design in harmony with the existing architecture
The design of the new addition pays homage to thebuilding’s original architecture. The horizontal roofline and rhythmic balustrades echo the existing architectural elements, ensuring a cohesive integration with the original design.
